West Papua is the Western half of the island of New Guinea – the second largest island in the world which lies just to the North of Australia. Since 1963, West Papua has been occupied by Indonesia and its people have faced ongoing brutality including false imprisonment, torture and killings from the Indonesian military.
West Papua was previously a Dutch colony before being claimed by Indonesia in a widely condemned ‘Act of Free Choice’ during which 1,025 men were hand-picked by the Indonesians and forced to vote, often at gun point, to become a part of Indonesia.
Indonesia has ruled with an iron fist making the raising of the West Papuan flag an illegal act with Pilep Karma currently serving a 15 year prison sentence for this so-called crime. Buchtar Tabuni and Sebby Sambom currently suffer in prison without a proper trial for peacefully supporting the International Parliamentarians for West Papua.
With the foreign media banned from West Papua, and organisations including the Red Cross and Amnesty international denied access, this appalling situation is becoming known as the forgotten genocide.
We need you to be there voice. We need you to speak out about what is happening in West Papua. We need you to tell your Government what is happening, to tell them to speak out. We need you to hear our cry for freedom.
